White Sand Dunes

What it is

The White Sand Dunes sit at the north end of the recreation area and provide easy dune access with a variety of bowls suitable for all skill levels. If Sand Mountain is the destination for experienced riders, this is the zone where an entire group of mixed ability can ride the same terrain without splitting up.

Bowls are the defining feature. They let riders of different confidence levels choose their own line and intensity within sight of each other, which is exactly what you want when you are keeping an eye on someone newer.

Why it suits mixed groups

• Gentler, more open terrain than the south end
• Bowls let confident and cautious riders share the same area
• Short distance back to White Sands Campground when someone is done
• A fenced, motor-free play area at the campground for children who are not riding

For genuine first-timers who have never operated a machine in sand, BLM points to the low-lying dunes southwest of Black Mountain rather than here. Use those for the first hour, then move up.

Access and staging

White Sands Campground is the natural base, with 100 sites set among juniper trees close to the dunes, with drinking water, flush toilets in warmer months, and the fenced children's play area. It is the most picturesque of the four campgrounds, which also means it is popular. No reservations exist, so arrive with a backup.

Riding it well

• Set a regroup point before you start, because bowls make it easy to lose sight of each other
• Whip flags are required and matter most here, where riders drop below sightlines constantly
• Scout the backside of any ridge before cresting, same as anywhere in the field
• Watch for pedestrians and children near the campground margins
